3 things to do to hire the right builder or remodeler

3 Keys to Hiring the Right Builder or Remodeler

As you plan your new home construction or remodel, you’ll have many things to think about and consider. None are so important as hiring the right company to carry out your design plans. If you don’t start with the right company, you’re never going to be satisfied with the results. Most every homeowner knows to meet with several companies, see examples of their work either in photographs or in their showroom, to verify the licensing, and to check reviews and ratings online, but what else is there? Here are three things you should do before you sign a contract with a remodeler.

Treat Every Interaction as a Job Interview

Anytime you call or reach out to the builder or remodeler, evaluate them like you would a potential employee. They will be your employee for as long as they’re at your home working and through the post-work inspection and warranty. Think about how they respond to questions, does it take days or weeks to hear back or is it more prompt? Is the salesperson neat and clean? Are they on time and do they follow through with what they’ve promised when they promised? All these small things before you actually hire them are a good indicator of how they’ll be once they begin their work.

Ask for References

And follow through with a call. Have a list of questions to ask and listen to the responses. Don’t just call one person, call a few and see if there is consistency or if the answers seemed canned. If you hear all the same great things, chances are good you’re calling someone who has been provided the answers. Here are some questions to get you started:

  1. Did you need follow up and did they honor their workmanship warranty?
  2. How well within budget did they stay?
  3. Was the job completed when promised or were there delays that should have been prevented?
  4. Did they keep the jobsite clean?
  5. Were the workers respectful of your space and family?

The last two questions are especially important if you and your family (especially with kids) plan on living in your home during the remodel.

Find out What Vendors or Manufacturers They Use

If you’re planning an addition, you’ll need windows. Does the manufacturer or supplier they use have something that compliments the windows already in your home? For a kitchen or bath remodel, look at the cabinets available from their cabinet manufacturer so you can know before signing the contract that you have options you love. Ask for each major element you’ll be choosing in your remodel so you’re not surprised after it’s too late.
